Jet or laser: what technology do you trust

A color inkjet printer has become an integral part of PC peripherals. Thanks to this, it became possible to print high-quality color photographs at home. It is very simple to implement. The main thing is to choose the right photo paper, set up the printer and start the printing program.

Paper selection

First of all, you need to purchase photo paper. You should select a paper size of 10x15. It may be indicated on the package size in inches 4 "x6". Or in the form of a sheet format - A6. You can consult the seller about the quality of paper and the right choice of size.

Matte photo paper has a high degree of whiteness and high contrast in the printed image. It is used for those images that will be laminated, placed in a frame under glass or under the film of a photo album.

Glossy paper has a smooth shiny surface, coated with a special polymer. It is used to print photos of professional quality. Perfectly conveys bright saturated colors with a lot of color gradations and shades

Preparation for printing

Already available ready-made photos in digital format, if necessary, can be adjusted. To do this, you should use special graphic editors to improve your photo: adjust color, brightness, saturation, remove red-eye and a variety of flaws.

Graphic editor - a program (or software package) for processing graphic images that allows you to create and edit two-dimensional ready-made cliches using a computer.

Make sure the printer is connected to power. Next, you need to check the connection with the computer. If software is installed, insert photo paper into the paper tray (vertically).

Left-click on the photo you want to print. Call the context menu by right-clicking. Click "Print."

The “Photo Printing Wizard” program window opens. Press "Next". From the list of photos provided, select the one you need (one or more) and click "Next" again.

You will be given a choice of printer. Select the one on which the photo will be printed.

Click on "Printing Preferences". In the window that opens, in the "common parameters", specify "photo printing". Here you must select the size (format) of paper: 10x15 or 4 "x6" or A6. In the “media type” tab, specify the type of paper that you will use (indicated on the package). Click the "Next" button.

Choose the layout (location) of the photo. For a 10x15 photo: without white margins, select “full-page photo print”, with fields, “full-page fax print”. If you need to print photos in several copies in the column “Number of uses of each image” indicate the required number of copies. By clicking the “Next” button, start printing photos.

Inkjet and laser printers: comparison

We have reduced all the criteria for evaluating a printing device into one table.

For comparison, we used three types of printing devices: inkjet, laser and inkjet + CISS. Each technology we have assigned appropriate grades on a 3-point scale.

Obviously, the most profitable acquisition will be an inkjet printing device with a CISS. Laser printers in terms of price and photo printing are clearly lagging behind. But if you need to print only text monochrome documents in very high quality, then a laser is what you need.

Are you looking for a printing device that can print both photos and text in good quality and at the same time be in an affordable price category? The inkjet is the best choice for you.

In terms of color rendering, the inkjet printing device has no equal. True, the cost of consumables in this case is very high. But there is a way. Easily compensates for the problem of the high cost of consumables continuous ink supply system. With an inkjet, you can print both text documents and photos.

Printer selection

Before you familiarize yourself with these tips, you should re-evaluate the capabilities of your printing device. First of all, you should not use laser printers for printing photos. Of course, in recent years they have significantly improved their performance, but there are only a few models that can approach the quality of photo printing to “inkjets”. Yes, and especially demanding users may have questions for them.

The technologies that are currently headed are inkjet and thermal sublimation printing. Inkjet printers for home use have been known for a long time. Every year they become more accessible and more functional, and compared with laser devices, they are significantly superior to them in the quality of full-color printing.

The advantages of this technology is the ability to print photographs of various formats and on various media. Among other things, many inkjet printers can be upgraded by installing a Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS). This option allows you to reduce the cost of the print.

Thermosublimation photo printers appeared not so long ago, but have already established themselves as the most promising devices. Their main difference is that instead of ink, special cartridges with a film containing solid dye are used. Under the influence of temperature, the dye layers evaporate and transfer to paper. As a result, such equipment is capable of reproducing the color gamut extremely accurately, for which it is appreciated by professional photographers and those who have high demands on the printing of pictures. However, you should be prepared for the fact that sublimation printers are more expensive and the cost of printing will be slightly higher than that of inkjet "brothers". In addition, while there are restrictions on the format of photographs - usually 10 × 15 and 15 × 20 cm.

8 tips for printing quality photos

Of course, for the best quality results, you should spend time on a detailed study of all the characteristics of both printing and shooting devices - cameras. It will be useful to master the software - graphic editors and image processing tools.

However, there are a number of simpler solutions that can be tried without a strong “immersion in the material”. Experiment with your printer now and you may quickly find the best option for using it to print high-quality photos.

# Choose between different direct print modes

If your printer can have direct print modes from the camera (smartphone) and from various media (memory cards, USB-drives) - do not forget to experiment with both. The same image can sometimes be printed with noticeable differences in color or brightness.

# Auto-fix feature

Most modern photo-oriented printers have an automatic correction function that analyzes the image and can adjust several parameters at the same time. Among the most common settings are contrast, brightness, color gamut, and the option to remove red-eye.

# Photo preview

The latest series of printers from many manufacturers come with color displays. With their help, you can not only manage print jobs, but also see in advance how the printed image will look. This is especially useful if you are not able to rate the photo on any other device (for example, when you print directly from a memory card or USB drive).

# And what if not edited?

It is always worth keeping in mind that the colors and shadows that you see on the screen will not be the same as on the finished print. Therefore, if you have such an opportunity, try printing a photo without any processing at all. Maybe this option will suit you well or give you a clear understanding of what exactly is worth improving in the picture.

# Use suitable paper

The best quality paper gives the best quality prints and here you can conduct a large number of experiments. In this case, it should be taken into account where your picture will be stored - in a closed album or in public view in a frame? Experiment with different types of papers - glossy and matte, from various manufacturers. Make sure the paper you select is compatible with the printer and that it has the appropriate settings.

# Type from an editing program

Many professional photographers print pictures directly from image editors, because in this case they have much more control over the basic functions of cropping, resizing and color management. Even not too complex and functional programs (for example, those that come with the printer) can significantly improve the photo or solve the most common problems. By changing settings and experimenting with color, you will have the opportunity to visually familiarize yourself with the result of your manipulations.

# Edit copies, not originals

Before you start editing the photo, create a copy of it. This will allow you to return to the original at any time, if necessary, and conduct any number of color experiments.

# Avoid file compression

Most cameras save images in jpg compressed format by default. For the best quality photos, the compression function must be turned off, and you should also carefully edit the file on your computer. To avoid possible deterioration in quality, experts recommend using the tif format.
